Reading Sources: Hero of the Mountain by Ivan Parvov

__________________________________________________________

Hello All.
We are the members of UNP Reading Circle Community (RCC) from English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, State University of Padang.

Now, we'd like to tell you about our activity in the fourth meeting.
In this fourth meeting, we discussed about the story by Ivan Parvov: Hero of the Mountain.

Before we tell you about our discussion, here's a brief story of Hero of the Mountain.

The story of hero of the mountain told about a little fox, Lulu, who was very excited to watch the big contest 'Hero of the Mountain'. He wanted to meet the most famous heroes in the world. So, he studied the map, and prepared himself well. He woke up early, brushed his teeth and ate breakfast quickly.
On the way to the contest place, Lulu met a beetle who had fallen to the river, he stopped and help the beetle. After that, he hurried to go, but he saw a bunny who lost one of its gloves. Lulu decided to help the bunny. Then, he hurried to the mountain, but then he met three firemen-ants who were carrying a new door which was too heavy. Again, Lulu decided to help them. When Lulu arrived at the mountain, the contest was over. He sat sadly. But suddenly, the owl magician, Boran, came and told him not to be sad. He gave Lulu the crystal 'hero of the mountain' award. Lulu was confused. Then Boran said that Lulu was the real hero of the mountain because he missed the contest that he wanted to see so much to help beetle, bunny, and ants.

In our discussion, we wondered why the writer of this story use a fox as the main character? We know that a fox is a sly and cunning animal, so why did the writer make the fox became a good and friendly animal in his story? Why didn't he choose another animal which already have a good impression in the first place, like the rabbit?
and then, why did the fox want to help the beetle, bunny, and ants when he really wanted to come and see the contest? Why did he want to face the difficulties to help them and waste his time? Why didn't he just ignore them and hurry to see the contest?

and also, why did Lulu become a winner when he didn't even register to join the contest? How did the owl know that Lulu had helped another animal and decide that he was the winner?

Those are some things that we wondered about.
Here are our interpretation.
We thought that the reason of the writer to choose a fox as the main character were:
First, the writer wanted to tell that even a bad animal could do something good. It's like 'something bad is not always bad, something good is not always good' or 'there is always a kindness in one's heart'. We could not always judge bad people as bad, and vice versa. We should be able to accept different side of a person.
Second, the writer wanted to mock us. By making a fox as good and friendly character in his story, it seemed like, the writer wanted to tell something like 'even an animal could be good, what about you as a human? Could you be good too? could you help other people who need your help?'

Then, about why the fox wanted to help others, we had different reason. Some of us thought that it's because we need to help the people who need our help even though we did not know them, but some of us thought we don't need to. Some of us thought that by helping other we might able to achieve our goal even though we have to sacrifice our chances to achieve that goal first. There is nothing wrong by letting our chances go if we really need to help others, like Lulu, who sacrifice her time to help others.
We need to realize that sometimes we just need to sacrifice something for the sake of others. But, we also have to believe that the things or chances that we sacrifice, they would definitely come back to us, perhaps in different way but it would be much better than we expected.

Here, our advisor, Miss Lina, also shared what she thought about that. She asked us to imagine that we were teachers, and asked what would we do if a students was late for class? Would we allow him to come in and join the class or be angry and kick him out?
One of us said that we should allow that student to join the class if the reason of his lateness was acceptable. Miss Lina agreed with this, but she still had better answer. She said, of course we had to allow that student to join the class, if we kick him out, he could not study. Why should we waste our energy to get angry? Wouldn't it just disturb the learning process? and what about his lateness was caused by something urgent or emergency? What about he is the only one who can help, say, a grandma crossing the street? Is that even worth-scolded? Doesn't it make us bad to get angry with that?
Thus, we can conclude that, if we are the only one who can help the people in need, we need to help them. But, if we know that there are some people who can help them, and our role is just as alternative, we need to prioritize what we need to do.

Now, about Lulu who unexpectedly become the winner of the contest, he got the award even though he did not join the contest. But the owl knew about his kindness in helping other and decided that he was the winner. It implied that even though nobody knows good things we do, there must be one who knows. It's our God. and He would give us the best award if we do good things sincerely.

That's our interpretation of the story.
We'd like to invite you to give some comments, opinions, critics, or suggestions for us.
And, for you who want to share what you think about the story, feel free to comment in our post.
And, RCC always kindly invites you who are interested to join.

Reading Sources : It's Amma's Birthday Tomorrow by Janaki Sooriyarachchi

__________________________________________________________

Hello All.
We are the members of UNP Reading Circle Community (RCC) from English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, State University of Padang.

Now, we'd like to tell you about our activity in the third meeting.
In this third meeting, we discussed about the story by Janaki Sooriyarachchi: It's Amma's Birthday Tomorrow.

Before we tell you about our discussion, here's a brief story of It’s Amma’s Birthday Tomorrow

A little girl, Nikini, saw her father brought a big gift box. She learned that tomorrow was her Amma's (mother) birthday. She wanted to gift a wonderful gift for her. She was wondering all night but she could not think of any gift that could express how much she loved her Amma.
Then, a firefly came. Nikini wanted to give the greatest gift for her Amma, but the firefly suggested Nikini to give 'the biggest’ gift, like the sky or ocean.
Then, they wandered in the forest to find the gift. They met a mynah bird. It suggested Nikini to give the ‘most beautiful’ gift, something like beautiful flowers, beautiful pearls. They continued to look for the gift. They went on and on but couldn’t find anything. Then, Nikini met a rabbit. It suggested to give the ‘most precious’ gift in the world, something as precious as the moon and the stars
They went together further away into the forest. On their way, she met a spider. It suggested Nikini to give a gift that could make her ‘the happiest’, something like a delicious cake, a lovely birthday card, a nice pai of shoes, a colorful dress.
Nikini thought for a while, then she decided to give the most beautiful sari for her Amma.
The spider helped Nikini to  weave a beautifu sari. The firefly helped her to decorate it. And the rabbit helped to paint the sari with beautiful colors from flowers. The mynah bird shook the branches of trees and they shed dew drops on it.
They made the most beautiful sari for her Amma’s birthday gift. But, the strong wind came and torn the sari into pieces. Nikini was very sad.
Nikini's mother, who kept looking for her, finally found her crying under the tree. Nikini told her about everything. Then, Amma said that the greatest, biggest, most precious, and most beautiful gift she has ever had in her life was Nikini.

In our discussion, we share some thoughts about how this story has some deep meaning rather than just a children story.
Things that become our discussion are:
Why did Nikini find the gift without her father's help? Why she had to be helped by animal? Where did her father go?
And, why did the writer use firefly, rabbit, bird, and spider as the characters which helped Nikini to find the gift for Amma? Why not another animal?
Also, why did the writer use the terms ‘the biggest’, ‘the most beautiful’, ‘the most precious’, ‘the happiest’, to express the gift?
And, why did they decide to make a sari after wandering around to find a gift?

Well, it was such ironic that Nikini wasn't helped by her father but she was helped by the animal. Whereas, it would be easier for her to find the gift if her father was the one who helped her, not the animal- firefly, mynah bird, rabbit, and spider.
So, regarding to that case, the writer probably wanted to tell us that men have a weak side if it's about love and affection. Men usually tend to be passive and don’t really like to show their feeling. For instance, when they are sad, they will not cry--not in front of people. It's different with woman. If they sad, they will cry directly no matter where, when, and who see them. Also, may be the writer wanted to say that men tend to avoid cooperation that will waste their time, and like to do something simple without giving much effort. Like Nikini's father who did not help Nikini, who perhaps had so many requirements for the gift. Also, men are not so patient in dealing with kids.
So, it can be assumed that women can’t relay too much on man in this case.

Then, why the writer used those four animals as the characters who helped Nikini. We assumed that the four characteristics of animal used by the writer represented the characteristics of men. Each animal symbolize the men. That's why the writer did not use another animal but firefly, bird, rabbit, and spider.
The firefly, it has its own light which could shine in the dark. It's just like men who can be a leader for women. Then, the bird, in this story it flew to find something that could make the sari looked great, so as men, men would try his best to find something women need.
Next is the rabbit, it is a fast-runner. so it implied that men have more energy to do harder work. Men are stronger than women. So, women can rely on them. The last animal is the spider, it can create its own web. It shows that men can take care of people who are important for them.
Thus, beside their weak side in love and affection, men are reliable in some aspects.

What is the writer purpose to use the terms ‘the biggest’, ‘the most beautiful’, ‘the most precious’, ‘the happiest’? It seems that the writer wants to tell the readers, especially children, that  we should see our mother as ‘the biggest’, ‘the most beautiful’, ‘the most precious’, ‘the happiest’ because our mother always love us, there is nothing that can be compared to our mothers’ love.
Mothers’ love is the biggest, the most beautiful, the most precious, and the happiest thing that we can find in this world. There nothing can replace that. Even the most expensive jewelry or the most beautiful scenery is not comparable to the mothers’ love. That’s why the only thing that we can give to our mother is our love. our love as good children who always obey and listen to their words. It’s the only thing that the mothers need as their gift from us.

Then, why did they decide to make a sari? It seems like the writer has a hidden agenda to promote the culture of her country. She is a writer from Sri Lanka where sari is their most precious thing in their culture. So it can represent the love of a mother. The process of making a sari is not easy. There is much effort to make a good sari.
Maybe that’s why the writer use sari instead of the other gift in her story.

That's our interpretations of the story.
Now, we'd like to invite you to give some comments, opinions, critics, or suggestions for us.
And for you who want to share what you think about the story, feel free to comment in our post.
And, RCC always kindly invites you who are interested to join.

Reading Sources : The story of Sleeping Beauty, retold by Mae Broadley

__________________________________________________________

Hello All.
We are the members of UNP Reading Circle Community (RCC) from English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, State University of Padang.

Now, we'd like to tell you about our activity in the second meeting.
In this second meeting, we discussed about the story of Sleeping Beauty.
Yeah! We know what you think. It's JUST a story for children, and it will not be so interesting to be read or discussed because it's very familiar.
You know, we used to think like that too. But, it totally changed when we discussed the story in RCC.
Have you ever imagined that such story has a very deep meaning and hidden agenda?
Yes or No?
Well, we'll tell you about our discussion of this story .
Now, let's read a brief story of sleeping beauty.

Sleeping beauty is a story about a 15 years old princess who felt asleep after wounded herself with a spindle. The story began with a king and a queen of a far-away kingdom who wanted to have a child. Then, the twelve wise women possessed with the power of magic granted the their wish. A princess was born.
A feast was held. In this celebration, the wise women blessed the princess with beauty, grace, kindness, wisdom, wealth, and joy. However, the king forgot to invite one of the twelve wise women. The wise woman then appeared, and blessed the princess with a hundred years' deep sleep if she pricked herself with a spindle. After that, the king ordered that all spindles in the land should be destroyed.
When the princess turned 15, she wandered through the rooms and chambers in the palace. Then, she came to an old tower where there was a woman with a spindle. The princess who never saw the spindle, come closer and touch it. She pricked her finger with it. Then, she fell down on the floor and lay in a deep sleep. After hundreds years of sleeping, finally a prince came. He kissed her, and then she woke up. The prince and the princess got married, and they lived happily.

In our discussion about the story, we shared some thoughts.
Regarding to the place or time of this story, we thought that this story occurred in a long time ago, where there were still a kingdom, many green valleys, and magic was a usual thing.
About the story, we thought that the story is just a fairytale whose purpose is to entertain the children. The story is impossible to happen in our real life. There is no way that someone could fall in a deep sleep just because touching something that they've never seen before --In this case, pricking herself with a spindle.
But, it also came to our mind that may be the writer wanted to tell parents that they should protect the children from something new, which could be dangerous. In addition, from the story we could conclude that even if the person is 'perfect', and has everything, life is not always easy. Even the small thing could ruin that all.

When we just gave our simple interpretation about the story, our advisor, Miss Lina, gave us an amazing interpretation which we never thought of. We were really amazed. It felt so great to listen to her, it even encouraged us to make the interpretation that great.

Miss Lina began her interpretation and opinions about the story by asking some questions.
Why would a young princess, who was in her productive life, who has everything--she was beautiful, loved by all people, talented, and kind, fall asleep after wounded herself with a spindle that she has never seen before?
As we know that the princess was very young and she could do anything she wanted to do. But she ended falling asleep and had to give her creativity and productivity up for a little wound caused by spindle.
She even could not control her own body, and could not wake from that sleep by herself. Why should she wait for a prince to wake her up?

Miss Lina said that those might be some hidden agendas from the writer. A girl, at that time, should not do anything and just wait for a man to take her, and be good for him. It indicates that the girls might not do anything they wanted, and had to sit nicely and just wait. Girls do not have freedom to express themselves in front of many people. They could not explore their creativity. They had to give up and just obey the system. These thoughts are supported by the part of the story in which the princess suddenly fall asleep and wait for the prince.

As final statements, Miss Lina said that girls should not give up easily, and limit their creativity and productivity just because people say that they should be good girls by remain silent and not causing any trouble. Girls do not always need to follow old paradigm that they should wait for men. At least, Girls have to try what they want to do, but still knowing the limitation, so that they can create a good future, create their history.
Miss Lina also said that We have to make our own history and not to wait for someone to make the history for us.

That's our discussion about the story of sleeping beauty. It felt good to be able to share our thoughts with others. Here, we'd like to invite you to give some comments, opinions, critics, or suggestions for us. And for you who want to share what you think about the story, feel free to comment in our post.
And, RCC always kindly invites you who are interested to join.

__________________________________________________________

Hello All.
We are the members of UNP Reading Circle Community (RCC) from English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, State University of Padang.

Now, we'd like to tell you about our activity in the first meeting.
Since it's our first meeting, which is also our first day forming RCC, it feels like an "opening ceremony".

We haven't discusses any reading yet, we just got an introduction about Reading Circle from our advisor, Miss Lina.
Miss Lina always wanted to have an activity where she could do something beneficial for her study and her life in a fun way ever since she was still in college. Then, when she studied abroad for her Master degree, she found the communities where the students seem not doing anything, but actually they think critically. It inspired her to make one too.
She hoped that the students could spend time more wisely by having meaningful discussion, not just wasting their time talking about something meaningless. Therefore, she wanted the students to have a community that is fun but beneficial. That's why she created Reading Circle Community (RCC).
What Miss Lina wanted could come true after she proposed that idea to us, her students in Extensive Reading class, and we accepted.
That's how this community created, began with having five volunteers members.

She also explained that there are some roles in reading circle. Each role has its own responsibility.
In Reading Circle, we have:
-Group discussion leader (GDL) : a facilitator in the group, to keep the discussion flowing
-Summarizer : present the summary of reading
-Connector : find connections between the text and the real world
-Word Master (WM) : find some difficult words in the reading
-Passage Person (PP) : look for well-wrtiten or key passage in the story
-Cultural Connector (CC) : find the cultural or historical background of the text

But, you need to know that RCC does not limit the role of the members. If the members want to have more than one role, it's fine.

Surely, RCC will be fun and challenging.
Wasting our time with having a fun reading, no force, no time limit, and we can also share our thought, and try to think critically.

If you want to know more about Reading Circle Community, you can look at the introduction here .

And, RCC kindly invites you who are interested to join.

Thanks (^o^)/
